A hedge fund analyst explains his stock research process. Full of excellent links to videos, articles, and books. Should I use Vanguard to buy individual stocks? Is purchasing them through Vanguard a good idea or should I open an account at ETrade or something else?

I've never done this before so I'm not sure what to compare, but here is Vanguard's fee schedule: Is this a good idea or is it dangerous to have one company manage my entire portfolio e. I know it's probably a silly question but I don't want to do something really stupid and lose all that I've worked for. Vanguard's brokerage services are decent but not spectacular and their brokerage interface is nicely integrated into other aspects of Vanguard's online platforms so, e.

If you're primarily interested in relatively straightforward trading -- no more than a couple dozen transactions per year, mostly long buys; some standing limit orders to prevent outsized losses, etc. They do also have more sophisticated brokerage services, e.

I personally find it beneficial to have all my accounts on a single platform. It's a time saver; there's also a psychological effect of being able to assess all your finances from a single screen; and I like knowing that when I'm dealing with Vanguard I'm dealing with a company that understands my overall financial position across my various accounts.

I've found in general it offers a positve organizing effect. All that said, my sense is that if you're trying to day trade or swing trade; or if you're looking to trade consistently with more sophisticated assets you have big plans to become a world-renowned FOREX trader; you hear the siren songs of the commodities markets and are ready to make your mark , then there are better platforms out there.

Vanguard is a sort of meat-and-potatoes, above-average for the average investor brokerage house. For many of us that's exactly what we're looking for but YMMV. I'm willing to pay that for the reputation and stability the brokerage has, and it's still less than Scottrade.

People shoe horn Vanguard as a index and etf brokerage but that's not the whole picture. If you're a buy and hold investor and certainly one with a fair amount of capital, I can find no better place, just realize they're not think-or-swim so nothing fancy or high tech.

I'd never use them to day trade or anything similar but for buy and holders, it works great. I figure Vanguard's fees for buying stocks are absurdly high to encourage staying within the cult let you know they think you should be buying their funds instead. It might be a bit dangerous to have everything at one shop, and Fidelity seems to have good enough equivalent options.

Not sure about options or margin though. Fee structure varies depending on level of Vanguard assets held. Less than 50k and it's 7 for the first 25 trades and 20 for the rest. I don't know how fidelity margin and options stack up but there rates are here: If you don't have 50k and are complaining about brokerage fees you're probably doing something wrong.

There is no catch. Basic buy and sell trades don't really cost anything to do. There is always some firm that comes down on the trade price like Scottrade before in a back and forth battle to get customers and then make money on additional services margin accounts, earning interest on uninvested cash balances, etc By going directly to zero no one can compete with them on price.

I suppose that's true; if they are able to make up for the losses. The day that happens I will be sure to switch services: Robin Hood makes its money off the interest of your uninvested cash balance, RH Gold I personally don't use it but it's a monthly subscription , and selling access to their API. I am going to move pretty much mine to Vanguard and I have free trades on all my accounts with Wells Trade. By the way as much shit as Wells Fargo gets in my area they are easily the lowest on mortgages.

If you own a home mortgage through wells, have a checking and can hit PMA all trades are like 8. Dollar avg cost of investing. Market is at an all time high I imagine there will be some pull back. Vanguard allows you to set up biweekly, weekly etc disbursements from your checking on the fly. It will be nice to set up an allocation at Vanguard and have me and my wife's account auto pull from checking and you re balance on the fly or do in place exchanges from within vanguard.

Vanguard funds are tax efficient and anyone pushing above the 25 percent bracket should put that as a to do before anything. Vangaurd funds rarely have capital gains.

Don't most online trading sites allow you to setup automatic disbursements from your accounts? If well's doesn't have that then I can't blame you for leaving. They need to get with the 21st century. Otherwise, I'm fairly certain most offer that, including fidelity and primerica. As for 3, vanguards 'funds' aren't any different, in regards to taxes, than anyone else's.
